Woodsman Hatchet

Woodsman Hatchet
Out of the desire to "Go West young man", grew an industry to supply the pioneers with the tools needed to make such a trip.

One of the more ingenious items was this hatchet and saw combination tool. It was effective, yet compact and easily portable. The tool originated in the late 1700s and gained instant popularity. With it's hatchet with spiked reverse, flat side panels for hammering, serrated ridges for striking flints and a long saw bladed folded inside it was truly an all purpose tool. The uses were limitless; chopping firewood, clearing brush, self defense, sawing, hammering, fire starting and more.

This particular hatchet was produced in the mid to late portion of the 19th century. it is 9 3/4" tall with a 7 1/4" saw blade. The handles appear to be bone all fastened with iron rivets.
