Made of heavy cotton twill fabric, the haversack was the satchel of the colonial era and has been widely used by soldiers to carry personal items even into the 20th Century.

A haversack (or similar satchel) was used by most people during the early american days to carry essentials since clothing lacked pockets. The word appears to originate from England during the Napoleaonic Wars, when civilians and soldiers alike carried "havercakes" to work with them. The bag they carried thier havercake rations in became know as the "haversack". The haversack was used by the United States military until the end of WWII.
